Youth exchange Athens was a landmark event for EVEC, bringing together young participants from across Europe to explore drone technology. The youth exchange Athens program built lasting cross-cultural connections in the historic Greek capital.
In November 2025, EVEC organized a 7-day youth exchange in Athens, Greece as part of our ongoing Erasmus+ DroneVET partnership. Twelve young participants from North Macedonia, Greece, Bulgaria, and Romania came together to learn drone piloting, data collection, and precision agriculture mapping.
Hands-On Training in Real Fields
The exchange featured daily practical drone flight sessions at an agricultural research site outside Athens. Participants learned to operate DJI Mavic 3 Multispectral drones, plan automated survey missions, and process NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) data using open-source software.
“This was my first time flying a real drone for agricultural purposes,” said Marija, a 22-year-old participant from Kocani. “We could actually see which parts of the olive grove were stressed just from the multispectral images we captured.”
Cultural Exchange and European Identity
Beyond the technical training, participants explored Athens’ rich cultural heritage and developed lasting cross-border friendships. Evening sessions focused on intercultural dialogue, with each national team presenting their country’s agricultural traditions and how drone technology could transform local farming.
Key Outcomes
The mobility produced several tangible results: each participant earned a Youthpass certificate documenting their new competences, the group collectively mapped 15 hectares of farmland, and the data collected will be incorporated into the DroneVET training curriculum being developed by the partnership.
EVEC will host the next exchange in Kocani in spring 2026, where participants will map the famous Kocani rice paddies from the air.
Impact of the Youth Exchange Athens Program
The youth exchange Athens initiative demonstrated the power of combining cultural immersion with technical education. Participants developed practical drone piloting skills and gained invaluable experience working in diverse multinational teams during activities including drone assembly workshops and supervised flight training.
EVEC plans to organize similar programs building on the success of the youth exchange Athens event. These initiatives align with Erasmus+ objectives of promoting mobility and skills development. Learn about our drone workforce training and drones in the green transition.
About the Youth Exchange Athens Program and Its Impact
The youth exchange Athens program represents one of EVECs most impactful initiatives, bringing together young people from across Europe to explore the intersection of drone technology, environmental sustainability, and cultural exchange. Hosted in the historic city of Athens, Greece, this program provided participants with a unique opportunity to develop technical drone piloting skills while engaging with pressing environmental challenges facing Mediterranean communities. Over the course of the exchange, participants collaborated on real-world projects that demonstrated how UAV technology can be applied to urban planning, heritage preservation, and environmental monitoring.
The youth exchange Athens experience went beyond technical training to foster intercultural understanding, teamwork, and leadership skills among participants. Working in multinational teams, young people from diverse backgrounds learned to communicate effectively, share knowledge across language barriers, and develop joint solutions to complex challenges. The program included workshops on drone regulations, hands-on flight training sessions, data collection and analysis exercises, and collaborative project presentations that showcased the innovative ideas generated during the exchange.
Key Outcomes and Future Directions for Youth Exchange Athens Initiatives
The success of the youth exchange Athens program has generated lasting impacts that extend well beyond the duration of the exchange itself. Participants returned to their home countries as ambassadors for drone technology and environmental sustainability, sharing their newly acquired skills and perspectives with their local communities, schools, and youth organizations. Several participants have since pursued further education and careers in drone technology, environmental science, and international cooperation, demonstrating the programs effectiveness in inspiring young people to become active contributors to Europes green and digital transitions.
Building on these achievements, EVEC continues to develop and expand youth exchange programs that combine technical skill development with intercultural learning experiences. Future iterations of the program will incorporate advanced topics such as autonomous flight systems, artificial intelligence for aerial data analysis, and the use of drone swarms for large-scale environmental monitoring. By continuously evolving our approach and expanding our network of partner organizations, we ensure that youth exchange programs remain at the cutting edge of both technology and pedagogy, preparing young Europeans for the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow.
The lessons learned from the youth exchange Athens initiative also inform our broader organizational strategy for promoting drone technology education across Europe. We have found that immersive, project-based learning experiences are particularly effective at engaging young people and helping them develop both hard and soft skills simultaneously. This insight shapes our curriculum design for all EVEC programs and reinforces our commitment to providing high-quality, experiential education opportunities that make a real difference in young peoples lives and career prospects.
